Did you know that air pollution inside your home can be up to five times worse than outside?? Within each room of your home bacteria can be lurking and germs will spread. If the kids have coughed all over the cushions, touched the door handles or shared drink bottles, you will be spreading those winter germs all around your house.
Yucky! The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do around your house this winter to stop the spread and stay healthier.
Let the fresh air in
Open your widows every day if you can. Let the fresh air in and the germs out. We know it’s probably freezing, but just 2 mins a day will help keep the air clean and fresh. Not only does it let out the toxins and gases emitted from gas heaters or wood fires, it will keep the germs at bay.
Condensation on the windows
People breathing and sweating or showering for a long time can build up condensation on your windows. Trapped in this will be the possibility of mould. Mould causes coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest and general illness. Ventilation is important during winter. Wipe the windows down with a microfiber cloth or open them for a few minutes so they can dry out.
If you’re using humidifiers or vapourizers in your home over winter (like in the kid’s rooms for coughs and colds) you may need to do the opposite every now and then! The build of moisture in the room can lead to germs hanging around longer than necessary.
Strip your bed
Trapped under those covers will be a breeding ground for germs. Either air your bed out for a while in the mornings (by pulling the covers right back) or change the sheets often (at least weekly during the winter months).
Wipe over things you touch frequently like light switches, tv remotes, door handles, taps… Those are the places we have contact with a lot during the day, and it’s important to keep them clean so we can prevent bacteria from piling up on them.
