4 reasons your home decor isn’t working

Do you ever feel like your home decor just isn’t working? It feels like it’s not cohesive? It’s easy to fall in love with lots of different interior design trends, but if you’re not sure how to bring it all to life, then you might need to narrow it down. Today we have 4 reasons which might help you work out why your home decor isn’t working and set you on the path to a more streamlined look…

You don’t have a specific colour pallet

Whether you like light and bright, dark and moody, browns, greys, greens…. it doesn’t matter, as long as it flows. Colour when decorating is essential. Getting it wrong can makes all sorts of things clash. The wrong wall colour can make your carpet look awful, or your blinds suddenly look out of place. The trick is pick 5 colours and stick to those throughout most elements in your home. That includes wall colour, cushions, carpet, curtains, furniture and accessories. For example here are 5 colours – white, grey, a dark colour (maybe black), a light colour (maybe dusty pink) and a contrasting colour (maybe green). Start with the wall paint – if it’s white then you have a lot more options. If you like a creamy tone then you may like to follow through with more timber and brown tones. Here’s a post here on how to choose white paint.

You don’t have a defined style

Modern homes need a contemporary style, while traditional homes can take on a more classic look. Figure out what style of home you’re living in (or the style you’re going for). You might see a couple of interior design “buzz” themes pop out at you. Eg. Scandi, Industrial, Minimalism, Mid Century Modern, Classic, Contemporary, French Country, Boho… Then you can start searching for inspiration using just these couple of words. Head to Pinterest and gather a mood board of styles you like and take note of the key elements.

If you’re not confident enough to mix old with the new then try not to do that. It gets confusing and is sometimes harsh on the eye if not successfully done.

You’re a slave to the trends

It’s easy to do when some homewares are so cheap and affordable these days! We all know the Scandinavian style is a trend at the moment and it looks fantastic when it’s working well. But if you’re only going to decorate your home following the trends (cough cough Kmart), then you’ll be hating it all in 12 months when that trend becomes unpopular! Make sure your big ticket items will last a good few years. Also be prepared to move on (aka waste money) when the trend is no longer “in”.

Your focal point is wrong

Another reason why your home decor isn’t working may be because you have your focal point wrong. Where does your eye naturally fall when entering the room? You want this to be the most attractive thing possible. Maybe it’s a fireplace, gorgeous rug, a comfy couch, or the bed. The focal point of a room influences the arrangement of furniture. A fantastic way to revitalise the room is to really emphasize the focal point. It also takes the focus off the less attractive features of the room. If you have the ability to move your furniture around try that. You do want your focal point to be in tip-top condition though. Style the areas you want people to see.

Happy styling.
